Sunnyside man arrested in connection with alleged knife assault

A 28-year-old Sunnyside man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend with a knife, according to Sunnyside Police Department Capt. Phil Schenck.

Police were called to a home in the 300 block of South 11th Street and informed that Miguel Angel Nieto assaulted the victim and held a knife to her throat.

Schenck said the incident is believed to have escalated when the suspect accused the victim of cheating on him.

According to Schenck, the victim reported that she has been assaulted by Nieto on several occasions. The suspect was arrested and taken to Yakima County jail. He is being charged with second degree assault, which is a felony.
