Sanchez, Cisneros boost running resumes

BENTON CITY - Grandview High School's two standout long distance runners, Brittnee Sanchez and Cordero Cisneros, added more accolades to their impressive resumes yesterday afternoon.

The two Greyhound harriers sped to victory at Thursday's Kiona-Benton Cross Country Invitational.

Cisneros, in his second straight outing, set another course record in the process. In winning the Ki-Be race, the Grandview senior sped to a course best clocking of 15:46. Cisneros also set the course record at Connell last Saturday at the CWAC all-league meet.

The Grandview upper classman was never really challenged Thursday afternoon. He finished 21 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Toppenish's Nick Peters (16:07).

The Ki-Be Invite featured a four-school field. Naches, behind the third place finish of Dan Walker (16:37) and the fifth place showing of Andy Breymeyer (17:26), won the boys team title with a meet low 34 points. Toppenish, with 65 points, claimed second place honors in the boys team race. The runner-up Peters and senior Tyler Story's sixth place individual finish (17:29) led the way for the Wildcats. The host Ki-Be Bears finished third in the boys standings with 68 points, and Grandview tallied 99 points to bring up the rear.

Grandview had an incomplete team in the girls race. Ki-Be's girls won the team title with 31 points, with Naches finishing second (49) and Toppenish third (89).

The Greyhounds, though, had the top individual female at the meet. The sophomore Sanchez, who like Cisneros set a course record at Connell last Saturday, was never pressed in winning Thursday's race in a time of 19:41. The closest runner to Sanchez was Ki-Be's Bonnie Roos, who finished well back in second place with a clocking of 20:16.

The only other girl from Grandview to compete yesterday was Sandra Romero. She earned an eighth place individual finish with a time of 22:38.

Cisneros was joined by five other teammates in yesterday's boys race. Darrin Naylor had the best showing of the five, notching an eighth place finish with a respectable clocking of 17:37. Also competing for Grandview were Marco Diaz, 26th in 18:56; Kris Nielson, 31st in 19:53; Zack Poteet, 33rd in 20:08; and Calen Nelson, 34th in 20:23.

The Greyhound harriers have just over a week to prepare for the District cross country meet, which will be staged on the Selah High School course on Saturday, Oct. 30.
