Scott, Garza turn in strong performances at 3A District meet

SELAH - Senior Brenden Scott and sophomore Ariel Garza led the Sunnyside High School cross country team at this past Saturday's Mid-Valley League District meet, hosted by the Selah Vikings.

Scott ran to a heady clocking of 16:46 to capture third place individual honors in the boys race. Garza notched a sixth place individual finish in the girls race.

In placing third, Scott was one of only four boys to finish the race in under 17 minutes.

The boys winner, Ellensburg senior Joe Darda, clocked a first place time of 16:14. Selah's Gary Lorance, a junior, finished in 16:28 to claim runner-up honors. Scott was 18 seconds behind Lorance for his third place showing. The only other boy to crack the 17-minute mark was Ellensburg sophomore Isak Bergman, who hit the finish line in 16:55.

Team-wise, the host Vikings won the District boys title. Selah posted a meet low 51 points. West Valley was second with 59 points. Rounding out the other boys team scores were Hanford in third with 65 points, Ellensburg fourth with 80 points, Wapato fifth with 119 points, Sunnyside sixth with 145 points and Prosser seventh with 199 points.

The next highest individual finish for the Sunnyside boys came from senior Cipriano Meraz. He clocked an 18:14 to place 25th. Also running for the Grizzlies in the varsity boys race were sophomore Sterling Scott, 31st in 18:56; senior Gregg Burbidge, 42nd in 20:44; freshman Mathew Santoy, 44th in 21:48; sophomore Dane Schmick, 46th in 22:03; and junior Jose Salinas, 47th in 22:32.

West Valley won the girls team title at District, unbelievably with a meet low 19 points. The next closest team to the Rams was Selah, which tallied 79 points. Sunnyside placed fifth with 140 points.

The Rams scooted to the girls team title by claiming the top four individual finishes in the race, and by placing six girls in the "Top 10." The overall winner was junior Michelle Schubert, who sped to a clocking of 19:28.

Sunnyside's top finisher, the sophomore Garza, was the sixth girl to cross the finish line. She recorded a time of 22:15.

Also running for the Lady Grizzlies in the girls race were senior Mercedes Martinez, 22nd in 23:44; sophomore Christina Fuller, 31st in 24:24; and junior Andrea Benitez, 44th in 30:53.

All of the Mid-Valley League teams advance to this coming Saturday's Regional meet, to be staged in Richland. From there, the top finishers will move on to the State meet competition.
