Salaries make up 79 percent of Sunnyside School District's $50.1 million budget

Of the Sunnyside School District's $50.1 million budget recently adopted by the Sunnyside School Board for the 2004-05 school year, 79 percent of those funds will be used to pay salaries for everyone from building secretaries to the superintendent.

This year not everyone in the school district will be receiving a raise. Among teachers, salary rates will range from staying the same as last year to a 7 percent increase, depending on where a teacher falls on the salary scale. The pay raises are technically only in place for newer teachers with less than seven years of experience.

The district's Executive Director of Business, Dave Plesha, explained that a first year teacher, who started with the district last year, will receive a 4.4 percent raise, going from making $29,149 last year to $30,427 this year. If that same teacher spent the summer taking college classes and earned an additional 15 college credits, they will see a 7.2 percent raise in their salary, going from making $29,149 last year to $31,249 this year. The teacher salary schedule takes into account both years of service and college credits and degrees.

Plesha noted that it is possible for teachers with more than seven years of experience to not receive a raise at all this year. For example, a teacher with eight years experience and no additional college credits will continue to make $34,202 a year. Also, those teachers who have reached the top of their salary scale, such as a teacher with a Master's degree and more than 16 years of experience, will continue to earn $50,906 a year.

Plesha said one thing the district is offering teachers throughout the district to make up for the lack of a raise this year is the option to work two more days during the year and be compensated for putting in the extra time.

When it comes to classified staff members, which includes building secretaries, para-professionals, custodians, maintenance crews, food service workers and bus drivers, nearly all can expect to see a 1 percent raise this year. Plesha explained that the state funded a 1 percent increase in salary for some classified staff, namely custodians, building secretaries and the maintenance crews. However, that 1 percent raise was not funded by the state for the rest of the classified staff in the district. Plesha noted that the district will use its own funds to ensure that the para-professionals, food service workers and bus drivers also receive a 1 percent raise this year.

Also included in the budget are salaries for building principals and assistant principals. According to school district officials, the range in salaries for assistant principals in the district for the 2004-05 school year is anywhere from $65,949 for a first year elementary school assistant principal to $82,251 for a secondary school assistant principal with several years of experience. When it comes to building principals, the salary range for the 2004-05 school year is $74,087 for a first year elementary school principal to $90,363 for a secondary school principal with several years of experience.

As for the Sunnyside School District's three executive directors, the salary scale tops out at $93,809. According to district officials, all three of these positions are topped out on the salary scale for the 2004-05 school year.

The district budget also includes the salary of the superintendent, who is set to make $115,906 during the 2004-05 school year. That is an increase of $1,147 over the $114,759 salary the superintendent was paid last year.
