HERMISTON, ORE. - A mere 35 seconds separated the winner of the Hermiston Invitational and ninth place finisher Brenden Scott of Sunnyside.
Scott scooted around the five-kilometer cross country course in 16 minutes, 57.7 seconds. The winner, Hermiston's Lorenzo Gonzalez, posted a winning time of 16:22.9.
The top finisher for the Sunnyside High School girls cross country team last Friday was Mercedes Martinez. She clocked a 23:25.4 for a 42nd place finish. The girls winner was Hayley Overson of LaGrande, Ore., who posted a time of 19:23.0. The Mid-Valley League's top finisher in the girls race was West Valley's Michelle Schubert, who placed fifth (20:07.0).
In placing ninth in the boys race, Scott turned in the fastest time of any Yakima Valley prep runner.
Scott's teammate, Cipriano Meraz, had the next fastest time for Sunnyside. Meraz clocked a 19:28.4 to finish 44th. Also placing for the Grizzly cross country runners were Sterling Scott, 66th in 20:45.5, and Dane Schmick, 92nd in 24:07.6.
In Friday's girls race, behind Martinez's 42nd place finish, Sunnyside's Christina Fuller placed 89th with a clocking of 29:17.3. Also competing for the Sunnyside girls squad were Veronica Almeida, 92nd in 30:55.1, and Angie Fernandez, 93rd in 31:13.6.
In the Hermiston Invitational JV boys race, Sunnyside's Travis Johnson placed 119th (24:34.8) and Lance Warner finished 141st (29:39.8). The only competitor for Sunnyside in the JV girls race was Kayla Bellamy, who finished 64th with a time of 35:03.1.
The Grizzly cross country team is scheduled to compete at the Prosser Invitational this coming Saturday.
