SELAH - The Selah Vikings girls volleyball team doesn't have many upperclassmen this year. It doesn't matter. The Vikes are once again the team to beat in the Mid-Valley League, as Sunnyside learned last night.
"Selah is as strong as ever, even though they're a young team," said Sunnyside Coach Angel Carrizales. "They play club ball year round, and it shows."
The Vikes rolled to a relatively easy sweep of the Lady Grizzlies Tuesday evening, winning by scores of 25-11, 25-9, 25-12. Selah improved to 5-0 in conference play with the victory, while the Sunnyside High School team fell to 0-5.
"Selah is very strong," Carrizales said. "They only missed three serves all night. They also have a very quick offense, and their setter, even though she's young, does a good job."
The setter in question is Allyson Powell, who finished with 12 assists off her pinpoint pop-ups at the net. Powell, too, recorded three service aces against the Lady Grizzlies. Another Viking who stood out last night was McKenzie Headley, who dominated the net with five kills and three blocks.
Sunnyside may have lost to the powerful Viking squad, but it wasn't for a lack of effort. Carrizales said one of her players especially turned in a noteworthy performance.
"I thought Jaymee Arevalo had a very good night," Carrizales said of the senior. "She hit really, really well, only committing one error in 16 attempts.
"Jaymee showed her age last night. She really picked up her game," Carrizales said of Arevalo's five kills and four digs.
Two other Lady Grizzlies also had respectable numbers against Selah. Christy Linde tallied six digs and four kills, and Devina Martinez piled up 10 digs, as well.
Another positive that came out of last night's league match, said Carrizales, is that her club didn't struggle as a unit as in past matches this season.
"We were unified as a team," she said. "Last night we held our composure, both on the floor and on the bench."
In looking ahead, Carrizales is optimistic her Lady Grizzlies will break into the win column this coming Thursday night at home against Wapato.
