TRI-CITIES - The Mabton Lady Vikings this past weekend proved they are a team to be reckoned with, taking home first place honors from Saturday's Tri-City Prep tournament.
During the tournament Mabton played against teams from Tri-City Prep, LaSalle and Prescott, even facing off against Mabton's own junior varsity team at one point.
"They looked good," Mabton Coach Olivia Mendoza said of her varsity.
Mabton started the tournament with games against Tri-City Prep and LaSalle, falling to Tri-City Prep by a score of 25-22 and defeating LaSalle 25-5. After the two initial games, bracket play began and the Lady Vikings found themselves playing against their own junior varsity team, beating them 15-8 and 15-7. The next team Mabton faced off against was from Prescott, a team the Lady Vikings beat 15-7 and 15-9. The final match found the Lady Vikings going up against the Tri-City Prep team for the second time that afternoon, winning by scores of 17-15, 13-15 and 15-3.
Mendoza explained that although LaSalle is a team Mabton sees during its regular schedule, both Tri-City Prep and Prescott play in different leagues.
"It was pretty interesting," Mendoza said to play against some different teams.
Helping the Lady Vikings take first place was Jessica Prieto who had 9 kills and 9 aces for the afternoon, Alida Mendoza with 9 kills and 2 aces, Michelle Tellez with 8 kills and 4 aces, and Rosa Reyna with 9 kills and 8 aces.
Mendoza said during the tournament her team really managed to hustle, coming together to beat the other teams.
The Lady Vikings will take to the court again Tuesday night, facing off at home against LaSalle.
