Megan Downing's 18-hole round of 115 led the Sunnyside High School girls golf team to a second place finish yesterday.
The Lady Grizzly linksters hosted a three-team match at Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course. Ellensburg, paced by medalist Kim Ellis' 102, won top team honors with a match low 340 strokes. Sunnyside placed second with a team score of 361, with Selah scoring a 367 for third place honors.
Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde explained that the three low 18-hole rounds comprised the team scoring.
"We only had four girls, Ellensburg had five and Selah just three," said Rohde. "So we decided to go with the three low individual scores to make up the team scores."
The first place Bulldogs, besides the 102 posted by Ellis, also got a 110 from Rachel Hagbo and a 128 from Jeanette Powers.
Downing, in shooting the low round for the Lady Grizzlies, opened with a front nine 51. Her front side highlight came on the par-4, fifth hole, which she parred. Downing struggled a bit after the turn, making her way around the final nine holes with a 64.
The second low round for Sunnyside was turned in by Vicky Castro. She parred two holes-the par-3 second and the par-5 15th-enroute to carding a 122 (63-59).
Dacia Drollinger failed to knock down any pars Thursday, but was a model of consistency on the front nine in posting the third low round for the Lady Grizzlies, a 124. She toured the front side with a 53, settling for a 71 after the turn.
Sunnyside's fourth golfer, Nicole Southern, only played the front nine yesterday and posted a 64.
Selah's three individual scores were a 114 by Sonia Taylor, a 125 by Emily Harris and a 128 by Brittney Wells.
The Lady Grizzly linksters' next match is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, at Apple Tree Golf Course. Their opponents will be Selah, Wapato and West Valley.
