MABTON - What a difference a week can make.
The Mabton High School fastpitch softball team committed 24 errors over the course of three games at a season-opening tournament in Pasco the previous week to open the season.
This past Friday, Mabton hosted Klickitat in the Lady Vikes' Greater Columbia 'B' League opener. The notable statistic for Mabton was the Lady Vikes committed just one error in the doubleheader.
"We did pretty good," said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita. "The girls did a great job. It was a great recovery from the week before."
Mabton dominated the opener, winning 13-3, behind the pitching of Alida Mendoza. Sophomore hurler Josie Chase held her own in the nightcap for Mabton, as the Lady Vikes fended off Klickitat 10-7.
Sustaita said both his pitchers did a solid job on Friday.
Mendoza was nearly dead on in her outing for Mabton. She gave up four hits and four walks, but did record four strikeouts.
The only runs Mabton allowed in the game came in the top of the second inning when the Lady Vandals plated three runs.
Mabton opened with a three-run spot in the first inning. The Lady Vikes added a run in the third and plated three more runs in the fourth. Mabton had a two-run burst in the fifth inning and ended the game with a four-run sixth. The game ended when Mabton's Michelle Tellez stole home plate for the final run.
Mendoza also swung a stiff bat at the plate for Mabton, going 3-for-4 with a walk. Tellez was dead on at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first inning. Tellez also drew a pair of walks. Jessica Orosco was 2-for-3 for Mabton with a walk and a double in the fourth inning.
Chase scattered eight hits in the nightcap for Mabton while striking out four Klickitat batters and walking three.
The Lady Vandals scored a pair of runs in each of the second and fifth innings. The Lady Vandals had a three-run spot in the top of the seventh inning.
Mabton opened the game with a three-run burst in the first inning. The Lady Vikes plated four runs in the third and three more in the bottom of the fourth.
Sustaita said Klickitat was a bit more patient at the plate in the second game.
Tellez and Mendoza dominated the plate for Mabton offensively. Tellez was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first inning and a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Mendoza went 4-for-4 with a lead-off home run in the first inning and a double in the fifth.
The Lady Vikes (2-0, 4-1) travel to Kittitas next Tuesday.
