LaSalle sweeps twin bill from Knights

UNION GAP - The LaSalle High School baseball team continued its domination of the Greater Columbia 'B' League this past Friday.

The Lightning put on another powerful display, sweeping both games of a twin bill against Sunnyside Christian, winning the opener 10-0 and taking the nightcap 14-3.

Sunnyside Christian High School Coach Jeff Bosma said LaSalle is a good team and they did some things very well in Friday's games.

The Knights weren't helped any by the efforts of LaSalle sophomore pitching phenom Seth Pleger. Sunnyside Christian did manage to put the ball into play despite striking out seven times, said Bosma.

Cole Van de Graaf provided Sunnyside Christian with its only hit of the opening game, that coming in the fourth inning.

Chad Den Boer tossed the opener for the Knights, going 4-1/3 innings. Bosma said Den Boer looked solid, but ran out of gas towards the end. Den Boer gave up nine hits and two walks, but had three strikeouts.

LaSalle got its first run in the bottom of the second and then added a three-spot in the third inning. The big inning for the Lightning was a six-run fifth.

Giving up too much too early was the problem for the Knights in the nightcap, which they dropped 14-3.

The Knights gave up 11 runs in the first two innings.

"They came out just red hot in that second game," said Bosma. "We buried ourselves in the first two innings."

LaSalle added three runs in the third inning.

The Knights got on the board in the top of the first when Aaron Van de Graaf scored off a passed ball. In the third inning Den Boer scored off a double from Cole Van de Graaf. The final run for the Knights came in the fifth inning when Aaron Van de Graaf came around off a double from Den Boer, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Sunnyside Christian had five hits in the nightcap, but also committed five errors.

"We were a lot happier with the way they (Sunnyside Christian players) swung the bat in the second game," said Bosma.

The Knights (0-4, 1-6) have a couple of weeks off before playing Wahluke at home on April 19.
