SELAH - The Sunnyside High School girls fastpitch softball team took one on the chin this past Saturday.
Opening Mid-Valley League play at Selah, the Lady Grizzlies were blanked 3-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Vikings won the error-filled nightcap, 7-3.
Selah pitchers April Jonas and Rachel Gillespie combined to limit Sunnyside to just three hits on the day. Jonas twirled a two-hitter while blanking the Lady Grizzlies 3-0 in the opening game. Gillespie allowed just one hit in Selah's 7-3 victory.
The only hits off Jonas in the opener were a pair of singles off the bat of Lacey Yanez. She singled in the second inning and again in the fourth.
Sunnyside hurler Vidi Pasillas spun a five-hitter in the first game 3-0 loss.
Pasillas was touched for 10 hits in the twin bill finale, although she did set four Selah batters down on strikes that game. The 10 hits, coupled with four Sunnyside errors, led to the Vikings' 7-3 win.
Sunnyside's lone hit in the nightcap was an RBI single by Jessica Cruz, that coming in the top of the seventh. She plated Crystal Soto, who got aboard on a walk, with a hotshot grounder up the middle.
The Lady Grizzlies opened the second game by plating a pair of runs in the top of the first. Oddly, the two-run burst came about without the benefit of a single hit. Victoria Solis opened the inning by reaching base on an error, one of five Selah committed in the game. She advanced to second on a passed ball. After a walk issued to Cruz, a ground-out off the bat of Yanez moved both runners up a base. The second passed ball of the inning allowed Solis to scamper home and Cruz to move to third. A third passed ball let Cruz dash home.
Selah put the second game out of reach with a four-run uprising in the bottom of the sixth.
Sunnyside (0-2, 2-4) is scheduled to travel to Connell this Tuesday for a single non-league game against the Eagles. The Lady Grizzlies will return to league play this coming Saturday when they host a doubleheader against visiting Wapato.
