KITTITAS - It was a combination of a little bit of everything that did in the Mabton High School fastpitch team yesterday against Kittitas.
The Lady Vikings dropped both games of the non-league doubleheader, losing the opener 10-5 and then the nightcap 14-12.
The story of the first game for Mabton was four errors and 11 walks that were coupled with seven hits by Kittitas.
"Those four errors came at crucial times," said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita.
Mabton's usually dominating pitcher, Alida Mendoza, had an off day, giving up seven hits and 11 walks.
"She had a hard time finding the strike zone," said Sustaita.
Mabton had a two-run fifth inning. The Lady Vikings ended the game with three runs in the top of the seventh. Celida Diaz singled to start the inning. Mendoza then walked before Michelle Tellez ripped a two-run double. Tellez later scored off a fielder's choice Diana Lopez hit into.
Tellez had a nice game at the plate for Mabton, going 3-for-4 with doubles in the fifth and seventh innings.
Sustaita said the errors and walks hurt Mabton, but said his Lady Vikes could have hit the ball better in the opener.
The nightcap was a bit closer, but Kittitas was able to out hit Mabton and came away with a 14-12 win.
Josie Chase had her problems on the mound for the Lady Vikes, giving up 17 hits before being pulled in the fifth inning. Mendoza entered the game in relief, recording three strikeouts and allowing no hits.
The big innings for the Lady Coyotes were a seven-run fourth and a five-run fifth.
The big inning for Mabton was a four-run fourth. Diaz started the fourth with a single. Mendoza then ripped an RBI triple. Tellez singled to scored Mendoza. Lopez hit into a groundout to score Tellez later in the inning. Shari Williams later scored Jessica Orosco with a single.
Mabton did have 13 hits in the game.
"The girls were focused a lot more," said Sustaita. "We went down fighting in both games. We ended on a good note."
The Lady Vikes (2-0, 4-3) will take part in a tournament at Wahluke this Saturday.
