WEST VALLEY - Junior Megan Downing shot a personal best 105 to lead the Sunnyside High School girls golf team to a third place finish at a four-school Mid-Valley League match yesterday.
Playing at Apple Tree Golf Course, Downing opened with a 49 on the back nine. It was the first time she broke 50 for nine holes of play, said Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde.
Downing scored a pair of pars on the two, par-5 holes (12 and 14). She picked up a third par on Apple Tree's signature hole-the 17th apple shaped, island green.
Moving to the front nine, Downing settled for a 56. She collected a fourth par along the way, getting the ball into the cup with her fourth shot on the uphill 9th hole.
Sunnyside tallied a team total of 553 to place third Tuesday.
The host West Valley Rams claimed top honors with a team tally of 368. The Rams' Ashley Filliol, Tuesday's medalist, carded a 13-over 85.
Selah placed second with a team total of 463 strokes. Wapato was fourth with a 638.
Following Downing into the clubhouse was teammate Nicole Southern. The freshman posted a 141 on front and back scores of 72-69, respectively. Yesterday was the first time Southern played a competitive 18-hole round.
Third in for the Lady Grizzly linksters was sophomore Christine Kim. She shot a 144 (66-78). Rounding out the team scoring was sophomore Vicky Castro with a 163 (86-77).
