Heritage College students collecting kindergarten learning tools
A group of Lower Valley Heritage University students are collecting items to give kindergarten children a leg-up when they start school next fall.
Education majors Jessica Sarmiento, Regan Mulrony and Karen Walker are currently collecting backpacks, pencils, glue sticks, color crayons, colored pencils, and other age appropriate materials for their "Gear Up for Kindergarten" project.
Donations will be accepted at Washington Elementary School through April 22, said Sarmiento.
She said people wishing to donate items, gift certificates or cash for the project may drop off such materials at the school.
Sarmiento said the project is designed to provide pre-schoolers from the Sunnyside School District's special needs and Head Start programs with a few of the basic needs of students entering kindergarten.
"Our Gear Up project will provide their families with some financial relief as their child prepares to enter kindergarten," Sarmiento said.
"It will also excite the students about starting school in the fall," she added.
"We encourage everyone to join us by getting involved in helping the children of our community to gear up for kindergarten," Sarmiento said.
People wishing to learn more about the project may call Sarmiento at 837-3808.
