GRANDVIEW - The Grandview girls fastpitch team was on fire last night, hitting everything that came their way. The Lady 'Hounds weren't about to let the Wapato Wolves walk away with another win.
The Lady 'Hounds put Wapato away early in the game, finishing with a 13-3 victory. Wapato defeated Grandview by a 10-3 score back on March 26.
Grandview Coach Doug Hansen said with his team scoring eight runs in the first inning, it shows that they really zoned in on Wapato's pitchers.
However, Hansen said what really stood out during Thursday afternoon's game was his team's defensive actions. He noted that the last time the Lady 'Hounds played Wapato they couldn't handle the bunts being sent their way by the Wolves. It wasn't the same story yesterday. Instead, he said third baseman Aiko Oki kept on top of things, noting that she had three assists for the day. She also finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
Also hitting for Grandview was catcher Felisha Cruz, who was 4-for-5 with one RBI; Sarah Trevino, who was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs; Zulema Cornejo, who was 2-for-3; Rocky Rodriguez, who was 2-for-4; Cheyanne Trevino, who was 1-for-4; and Olivia Macias, who was 1-for-2.
Hansen noted that Sarah Trevino had the game ending hit.
"With the bases loaded she hit a slap ball down the line, past the third baseman," Hansen said. Her hit ended the game after six innings due to the 10-run rule.
Pitching for the Lady 'Hounds was started by Sarah Trevino. She pitched into the second inning and finished with five walks. Senior Mari Cornejo came in during the second inning and shut down Wapato, finishing the game with five strikeouts, two walks and three runs. Cornejo was also 2-for-3 from the plate with 2 RBIs.
Hansen said he was happy with the win, which puts Grandview in a good place as they prepare for their first league games of the season next week. He added that it's been nice to see his team win three games in a row and come back to beat teams that have defeated them earlier in the season. He explained that the Lady 'Hounds have come back to beat the three teams they lost to when the season started.
Grandview will take to the field again next Tuesday in a league game against Othello. The doubleheader will be held in Othello.
