ZILLAH - Mabton placed fourth place honors at the South Central Athletic Conference track and field meet held in Zillah this past Tuesday.
The boys team earned 25 points, led by Moises Gutierrez, while the girls, led by Daniela Aguilar and Lupita Gomez, earned 23 team points, according to Mabton Coach Rob Roettger.
Aguilar took first in the girls long jump with a distance of 13-9-3/4. The sophomore also claimed second place honors in the long jump at 29-4, which was a personal record for her. Aguilar went on to earn second place honors in 100-meter race with a time of 14.3 seconds.
Gomez, a junior, was the first place winner in the triple jump with a distance of 29-8, which was her personal best in the event. She also claimed fourth place honors in the long jump at 12-8 and in the high jump at 4-2.
Freshman Veronica Sustaita of Mabton improved her time in the 1,600 meter race to 6:59, good for a fifth place ribbon, while Vanessa Gonzalez, also a Mabton freshman, improved her efforts in the javelin with a throw of 71-8, which was good for eighth place.
Gutierrez claimed first place honors in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 24.2. He then took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.9 seconds. The sophomore also took third place honors in the long jump with a distance of 17-7 and was fourth in the triple jump with a personal best distance of 35-11.
Robert Marquez took second place honors for the Mabton boys in the discus with a throw of 104-8, which was a personal best for the sophomore. He was a fifth place finisher in the shotput with a distance of 37-4.
Roettger said Ozzie Medina also had a good day, placing third in the 400-meter race with a time of 1:01. He finished in fifth place in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:24.
The Mabton 4x400-meter squad of Medina, Eric Tellez, Ramon Castillo and Pedro Huecias placed fourth with a time of 50.0.
Ryan Harris also contributed to the Mabton boys team score, placing fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 35-7 and fifth in the high jump at 5-4.
The Mabton High School track team will travel to Riverside High School Tuesday, April 26, and will host its own invitational on Thursday, April 28.
