Lady Knights limit Klickitat to one hit in league twin bill

The Klickitat Vandals might as well have been swinging toothpicks at the plate last Friday. In a South Central 'B' League doubleheader at Sunnyside Christian, the Vandals only managed one hit the entire afternoon.

SCHS hurler Emily Hernandez twirled a no-hitter in the opening game, leading her club to a 10-0 rout. In the nightcap, Carly DeGroot tossed a one-hitter against the Vandals in the Lady Knights' 7-3 victory.

The doubleheader sweep upped Sunnyside Christian's conference record to 4-0. Overall on the season, the Lady Knights are 8-3.

In completing the sweep of Klickitat, the Lady Knights got away with a shoddy performance.

"It wasn't our best game," said SCHS Coach Sandy Harris, explaining that her team committed five errors in the twin bill finale.

Despite the miscues, Sunnyside Christian was never seriously challenged. That was thanks mostly to DeGroot, who yielded just one hit to the Vandals. The lone base knock off her was a double in the sixth inning. DeGroot did allow five walks in the game, two of them in Klickitat's three-run third inning, but the nine strikeouts she had countered the free passes.

Sunnyside Christian scored all the runs it would need in the nightcap in the bottom of the first. With singles from Hernandez, Brittany den Hoed and Tori Van Wingerden, the Lady Knights pushed five runs across the plate that frame.

All told in the second game, Sunnyside Christian came up with nine hits. Four of them came off the bat of den Hoed. Van Wingerden and her older sister Tyssyna each swatted a pair of hits.

In the opening 10-0 shutout, the Lady Knights only managed five hits off Sherry Brewer. They were enough, though, as Brewer mixed in enough walks to give the Lady Knights ample scoring opportunities.

Sunnyside Christian started off the first game by plating three runs in the bottom of the second on singles by DeGroot, den Hoed and Abby Berkompas. The Lady Knights added a four-run burst in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to five walks and four passed balls.

Sunnyside Christian is scheduled to play a league doubleheader at Lyle tomorrow (Tuesday). A rematch with the Vandals is slated for May 3 at Klickitat.
