LYLE - Alida Mendoza paced the way for the Mabton High School fastpitch team this past Friday in a twin bill sweep over Lyle.
Mendoza had seven strikeouts and issued only two walks as her efforts powered the Lady Vikings past Lyle 15-4. A solid defensive effort backed up the pitching of Josie Chase in the nightcap, which Mabton won 13-3.
"She was on fire," said Mabton Coach Jesus Sustaita of Mendoza. "She was throwing strike after strike. She did a great job."
Mendoza didn't give up anything major to Lyle until the fourth inning. The Lady Cougars would plate all of their runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
One problem Sustaita wanted to address after the Sunnyside Christian game was the offensive production of his team. The Lady Vikings struggled in manufacturing runs against the Lady Knights despite out hitting Sunnyside Christian 16 to 7 in the both games, which were losses.
Mabton didn't have any trouble manufacturing runs this time around. In the opener, the Lady Vikings scored 15 runs off 14 hits.
"They kept the bats going," said Sustaita of his team. "I couldn't have asked for a better job."
Michelle Tellez swung a solid stick for the Lady Vikes in the opener, going 3-for-5, as did teammate Patty Mendoza.
Mabton topped off the opener with a four-run seventh inning. Celida Diaz started the last inning off with a double before scoring off a single from Diana Lopez. Tellez then singled. With one out and runners on second and third base, Mabton's Patty Mendoza ripped a two-run double, later scoring off a single from Josie Chase.
Two big innings and some solid defense keyed the Lady Vikings in the nightcap, which Mabton won 13-3 in six innings. The Lady Vikes used a six-run third and a five-run sixth to defeat Lyle. Diana Valle had a two-run single in the sixth for Mabton and Mayra Diaz had an RBI walk.
Chase had a four strikeout, eight walk performance on the mound in the nightcap, but she was backed up by some nearly perfect defense from the Lady Vikings. Mabton had only one error in the nightcap.
"Our defense was on," said Sustaita. "The girls played heads up defense."
Sustaita said Mabton was able to capitalize on the 10 walks Lyle's pitching staff gave up, getting key hits at the right times.
Diana Lopez had a nice game for Mabton, going 3-for-5 at the plate.
Mabton (4-2, 8-6) travels to Klickitat on Tuesday.
