Saturday's torrential downpour put a stop to the cross town doubleheader between the Sunnyside Christian High School varsity baseball team and the visiting Sunnyside High School junior varsity squad.
But the two local teams were able to get one complete game in before the thunderous rainstorm brought an end to the afternoon.
The Grizzlies junior varsity squad squeaked out a 10-9 victory over the Knights. The second game that was called off is set to be played again, but a date hasn't been scheduled.
"It was a good game," said Sunnyside Christian Coach Jeff Bosma.
In the end, it was eight walks by the Knights pitching staff and three errors that did Sunnyside Christian in.
"That is usually not good enough to win a game," said Bosma.
The Grizzlies nickled and dimed the Knights, scoring runs in all but two innings.
Sunnyside dinged starting pitcher Chad Den Boer for seven hits in four innings of work. The Grizzlies got three hits of Knights reliever Cole Van de Graaf. Both Sunnyside Christian pitchers had three strikeouts apiece and four walks each.
The Knights, though, had a couple of big innings. Sunnyside Christian tied the game at 3-all after scoring runs in the bottom of the second. The Knights then came up short in a rally in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs. In the sixth inning, Den Boer had an RBI single and Van de Graaf had a base-clearing double.
Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the first, Sunnyside Christian missed a key scoring opportunity, leaving the bases loaded to finish the frame.
One of the encouraging things about Saturday's game, said Bosma, was the bat of sophomore Luke Meininger, who went 3-for-3. Den Boer also swung a solid bat for the Knights, going 2-for-3.
Sunnyside Christian (0-4, 2-7) will play at Liberty Christian today (Tuesday).
