MOXEE - You can't make many mistakes against the defending 2A State runners-up and expect to be victorious. So learned the Sunnyside High School girls fastpitch softball team yesterday.
Three unearned runs off of four Sunnyside errors ended up spelling defeat for the Lady Grizzlies, as East Valley used the miscues to squeak out a 4-3 non-league win.
"It should have been a 3-1 win for us," said Sunnyside first year coach Ralph Mendoza. "The errors definitely figured in.
"Hopefully, with more reps throwing and fielding the ball, we'll take care of that," he added.
Even with the mistakes, Sunnyside was very much in Tuesday's game against the Red Devils, who placed second at the 2A State tourney last season in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for East Valley.
"Oh yeah, East Valley has another good team," Mendoza answered when questioned about the caliber of this year's Red Devil squad. "They have everyone back off last year's team."
Sunnyside, though, wasn't about to let the Red Devils off the hook easy. After falling behind 4-0 through the first five innings, the Lady Grizzlies put a scare into the home team in the top of the sixth.
Marina Martinez, batting in the No. 9 slot, started the rally by singling her way aboard. She was pushed to third on a single by leadoff hitter Jessica Cruz, who promptly stole second to put two runners into scoring position. Devina Martinez followed with yet another single to score the other Martinez. Two batters later, Lacey Yanez cracked a fourth single to plate Cruz. A third run scored when Sam Taylor lifted a sac fly to right.
"We came back on them," said Mendoza.
Unfortunately for the Lady Grizzlies, they couldn't muster a rally in the final inning to eke out a come-from-behind win.
Both teams finished with seven hits apiece.
Vidi Pasillas absorbed the loss on the pitching rubber. She went five full innings before being lifted in the sixth in favor of Sam Garcia.
"Vidi was pitching fine," said Mendoza. "We just put in Sam that last inning to get her some time on the mound."
The next outing for the Lady Grizzlies (1-5, 3-10) is scheduled for Friday, May 6, at Hanford.
