The Port of Sunnyside held a special meeting Tuesday for an executive session on a personnel matter.
After about 20 minutes of deliberation, Port commissioners reached a decision to authorize Amber Hansen to hire a temporary replacement for the finance officer, who is out on sick leave.
Today, (Wednesday), Hansen announced that Bud Schatz has agreed to be the temporary finance officer for the Port of Sunnyside. Schatz is the former finance director for the City of Sunnyside, who was fired earlier this year.
"We have a key employee that is out on medical leave for up to two months," said Hansen. "We can't get by without having somebody in that position."
Hansen explained that Schatz will be a temporary employee of the Port, rather than having services contracted out. Since the position is temporary, Hansen said she was free to contact people she knew could do the work rather than having to advertise and go through the hiring process.
The employee who is out on medical leave left about two weeks ago, according to Hansen.
Hansen said that duties will be assigned to Schatz and that some other duties normally handled by the finance officer will be divided among other Port employees.
One of the assignments Schatz will be working on is the Port's annual report, which is due soon.
