6-year-old injured in collision

A 6-year-old boy was injured Monday evening when the driver of an SUV struck the child, who was riding his bicycle down Willowcrest Road.

According to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, a 6-year-old Sunnyside boy was riding his bicycle eastbound in the westbound lane of Willowcrest Road when he was hit. According to reports, the boy was struck by a 2004 Dodge Durango driven by a 29-year-old Sunnyside woman. The accident report states that the woman was driving westbound on Willowcrest Road when she was momentarily blinded by the sun. The accident occurred at a curve.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the bicycle struck the right front bumper of the Durango and the child was thrown a short distance. The bicycle ended up wedged under the right front of the vehicle.

The boy was transported by ambulance to Sunnyside Community Hospital for treatment of a broken leg and other lacerations and contusions.
