Kennewick firm awarded Sierra Vista Middle School construction bid

A construction company which has previously worked in the Sunnyside School District was awarded the $12.1 million contract to build the district's new Sierra Vista Middle School.

The Sunnyside School Board awarded the bid to Chervenell Construction Company during a special meeting held Monday night.

According to Sunnyside School District Finance Director Dave Plesha, the Kennewick firm has a good reputation in the Sunnyside School District, having built Pioneer Elementary School. The Kennewick firm was also contractor for the Harrison Middle School remodeling project, Plesha added.

Chervenell was the sole bidder for the project, Plesha said.

"We had two other companies interested, but one pulled out at the last minute and the other wanted an extension in order to complete the bid process," he explained.

"But we want to get this school started and completed within a year," he added.

Plesha said as soon as the state approves the bid, construction on the new middle school will begin.

"We expect to have the building completed and ready for students by August 2006," he added.

The total bid for the new school, to be located north of Sunnyside on Washout Road, is $12,127,420.50.
