Train strikes, kills S'side man

MABTON - A 33-year-old Sunnyside man, stopped and sitting in a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse on the railroad tracks in Mabton, was struck by a train and killed this past Saturday morning.

Dead is Miguel A. Lua. He died at the scene of the collision.

Washington State Patrol troopers report that Lua was southbound on SR-241 when he parked his vehicle on the railroad tracks that intersect the state highway. A westbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, with 46-year-old Mike L. Hauch at the controls, collided with the Mitsubishi.

Lua's vehicle was totaled. There was no damage to the train.

The WSP said the cause of the 5:30 a.m. accident was inattention on the part of Lua, who was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the collision. WSP troopers also reported that it is unknown if alcohol played a part in Saturday's accident.
