A perfect morning

by Frances Potts

Isn't it great when you have a perfect experience? This struck me as I was sitting on my verandah enjoying mint lemonade made with mint from my own garden and eating a sandwich of tomato fresh from a neighbor's.

It doesn't get much better than this, I thought, as I looked over the flowers I'd just spent three hours weeding.

Then a little gray mouse popped out of a bed of violets three feet from me. He sat awhile with his back to me, and then strolled back and forth on the edge of the verandah, looking out over the garden and totally ignoring me.

He appeared to be checking out my new weed job.

After a few minutes of this sidewalk supervision, he slipped back into the green cover of plants, disappearing from view only to resurface and scurry off to other vistas.

This little play in one act was the finale to my perfect morning. Hey - everyone likes to have their work admired.

But if it had been a rat, that would have been an entirely different story!
