Families who use burn barrels to take care of everyday household waste are being offered a chance to dispose of their barrels for free.
Yakima County Public Services, Yakima County Solid Waste Division and the Yakima Regional Clean Air Authority are working together to encourage people to give up their burn barrels.
According to county officials, burn barrels are often used to burn prohibited items, such as paper, garbage, plastic, treated wood and petroleum products. Officials note that these items can create toxic smoke when burned.
The burn barrels will be accepted free of charge for disposal and recycling at the Terrace Heights and Cheyne landfills from Sept. 15 - Nov. 30. The county will accept up to two burn barrels per person.
