Mabton girls split weekend games

The Mabton girls basketball team split a pair of weekend games, beating Moses Lake Christian on Saturday after falling Friday night to 1A White Swan.

Despite the 47-27 victory Saturday afternoon in Moses Lake, Mabton Coach Mike Roettger said his team was just going through the motions. The Vikings lead just 13-10 at halftime, but came out and posted a 20-0 run in the third quarter to open the game up.

Moses Lake Christian responded by posting a 9-2 run, themselves.

Roettger said fatigue was likely a factor in his team's inability to maintain the intensity they came out with in the third quarter of Saturday's game.

"I think we came out a little more excited in the third quarter," he said.

Communication was also lacking, he said. Several miscommunications led to easy buckets for Moses Lake Christian, Roettger said.

Freshman Ana Jiminez led the scoring for the Vikings, dropping in 17 points in the outing. She also swiped five steals and added two assists to her team's cause.

Senior Anna Montelongo added eight points, and seniors Alida Mendoza and Regina Palomarez each scored six.

"You're always happy when you win," Roettger said.

The win improved the team's record to an even 1-1 on the season after the Vikings dropped a 62-39 home game to White Swan this past Friday.

Mabton turned the ball over 34 times, and the Cougars' speed was too much for the Vikings to handle, Roettger said.

White Swan's Shelbi Storm scored 16 points against the Vikings.

Mabton's Alida Mendoza led the way for the Vikings in the losing effort, dropping in 15 points. Mendoza also collected 10 boards and had three steals.

But White Swan's athleticism was too much for the Vikings to handle.

"They're beyond athletic, Roettger said. " They're probably the fastest team we'll play all year."

That speed was something Mabton just didn't have in its arsenal, Roettger said.

"We just couldn't match their speed," he said. "How they keep that going, I have no idea."

Mabton takes on Riverview (0-1) in a non-league game at home Tuesday night.

The Vikings open league play Friday at Klickitat.
