Kids can close out 2005 in hoop style

GRANDVIEW - Youngsters in grades one through eight will have an opportunity to say goodbye to 2005 during the first annual three-on-three basketball tourney to be held Dec. 31 in Grandview.

"It's such a long break and we thought it would be fun to offer a tournament over the holidays," said organizer Tammy Parrish, wife of Grandview boys varsity hoop coach Scott Parrish.

The initial plan wasn't to have a tourney on New Year's Eve Day, Tammy noted, but the only other weekend available during the break would have bumped up against Christmas.

The three-on-three tourney, sanctioned by the AAU Inland Empire district, will be held at the high school gym and is open to both boys and girls.

"I'm not sure how many teams we'll have, but if we have a bunch then we may use the middle school gym, too," Parrish said. "Our plan is to have everything finished by about 3 p.m."

Registration fee is $40 per team and deadline to register for the tourney is Dec. 23. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Grandview boys basketball team.

All three-on-three teams will compete in divisions by age group and are guaranteed at least three games, which begin at 9 a.m. and run throughout the day on Dec. 31. Co-ed teams are not allowed.

Teams must have at least three players, but not more than four. Each game will last 20 minutes and be played on a half-court.

Since the three-on-three tourney is AAU sanctioned, all players must have a 2006 AAU card, which is available online at www.aausports.org
