In a tale of two halves, the Mabton boys basketball team over came and won their third straight game, beating the Riverview Panthers 58-50.
"We struggled in the first half," Mabton Coach Brock Ledgerwood said.
The Panthers came out with a relentless press that caused the Vikings all kinds of problems. With the stellar play of Mabton's Andy Rodriguez the Vikings were able to keep it close and went into halftime trailing by a score of 26-20.
"In the second half we did a lot better with their press," Ledgerwood said. "We were able to break it."
In the fourth quarter the Vikings trailed by 2 at the beginning. They then switched to a trapping press that led to some easy hoops. They outscored the Panthers 23-13 in the final quarter to secure the win.
Mabton shot 18 -for-25 from the free throw line while Riverview managed only 3-for-16.
"We kept ourselves in the game," Ledgerwood said. "We stayed with it and kept playing hard and didn't give up."
Rodriguez led the Vikings with 26 points and 7 rebounds. He shot 12-for-17 from the free throw line.
Eric Tellez added 10 points and Ruben Mejia put in 9.
"We're playing hard and playing together as a team," Ledgerwood added.
Mabton next plays at Klickitat on Dec. 9.
