Mensonides franchise finalized

With 2005 winding down, County commissioners finalized this past Tuesday an irrigation pipe franchise agreement for Art Mensonides of Mabton.

Mensonides first sought the franchise two years ago, but it was tabled after neighbors complained of smells coming from the 600-acre dairy farm.

Since then, improvements have been made as Mensonides now injects nutrient into the soil rather than spraying it in the air.

Commissioners ink contract with Sunnyside Community Hospital

With an $800,000 grant in hand, Yakima County commissioners this past Tuesday agreed to a partnership with several hospitals as part of a Kids Connect program.

One of the partners is Sunnyside Community Hospital, which will receive a fulltime access specialist to help children and their families pursue health insurance and find a family physician.

Program director Dianne Patterson said the primary goal was to decrease the amount of emergency room visits for non-emergency health concerns.
