Poor free throw shooting costs Grizzlies league opener

YAKIMA - Sunnyside was just 2-of-8 from the free throw line Thursday night as the Lady Grizzlies fell 52-49 to West Valley in their last-ever Mid-Valley League opener.

The loss drops Sunnyside's record to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

With under two minutes left, and the game tied at 49 apiece, junior Kerri Urrutia missed two free throws that likely would have sealed the victory for her team.

Coach Leo Gomez said he told Urrutia it wasn't her fault the team lost because they had other chances to score the go ahead bucket, but things didn't go Sunnyside's way.

"It was a tough way to be in a position like that," Gomez said. "It's just the way it goes."

The loss was heartbreaking following a comeback from a seven-point halftime deficit.

But in the end, Gomez said it came down to who wanted it more, and his team didn't have the same will to win.

"They've always had a winning program and they've always had a good team," he said of West Valley. "They know that they're going to win. It's just hard to climb that ladder."

He told his team he wasn't disappointed with their performance.

"I told my girls, you guys played hard; you guys played a great game," Gomez said.

Talia Spini and Vanessa Torbay led the Grizzlies in scoring, dropping in 13 points each.

Spini also collected eight rebounds.

Fatima Ruelas had 10 points and seven boards.

Freshman Katie Wutzke again was a bright spot for Sunnyside, as she had six points in the outing.

Urrutia ended her night with five points, and Kayla Rollinger rounded out the scoring with two points.

Gomez said his team again came out flat, and starting with more intensity is something they need to work on.

Gomez also said he plans on adding new elements to his offense since his opponents have gotten accustomed to the same offense his team has been running since last season.

His team will have plenty of time to do so before returning to league play.

The Grizzlies return home for a non-league game Saturday against Connell, but don't return to league action until after the new year.
