With the help of family members in California and the Los Angeles Police Department, Sunnyside police were able to put a legal name, Xavier Perez, to the man who was shot to death in Sunnyside Thursday, Dec. 22.
The victim had been tentatively identified as Francisco Cabellero, the name he used when signing a rental agreement for the house at 1713 Guernsey Street where he was shot multiple times about 4 a.m.
Police are still seeking Jose Campos-Cortez, 22, and Laura Fabiola Ascensio-Munguia, 20, who, police believe, were at the home at the time of the shooting. With them, police believe, is Munguia's 2-year-old daughter, Laura C. Perez.
"The woman is the victim's wife or girlfriend," Det. Sgt. Jeff Cunningham said this morning.
Cortez, Munguia and Perez (Cabellero) all signed the rental agreement when they rented the home from Jose Gomez, who supplied officers with the names of his tenants.
Sgt. Cunningham, along with Det. Sgts. Jim Ortiz and Jim Orth, attended an autopsy on Perez' body in Yakima this past Friday.
"The final report on that autopsy is not in," said Cunningham. "And we are at a standstill with leads on that homicide, but we are still looking for the victim's roommates as witnesses."
Sgt. Cunningham was adamant that the Dec. 22 homicide was not connected to a shooting death of another man in Sunnyside on Dec. 24. "Completely separate," he said tersely.
