Francisco Acevedo, 18, of Sunnyside made a preliminary appearance in Yakima County Superior Court yesterday after being arrested in Sunnyside about 11 p.m. this past Sunday on a charge of murder in the first degree.
The same arresting charge was leveled at Michael Rodriguez, 25, of Sunnyside with bail set at $1 million for each man.
Both are scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow (Thursday) when formal charges will be filed against them.
Sunnyside police officers arrested Acevedo Sunday night in the area of 9th Street and Harrison Avenue where Rosendo Barron Hernandez, 29, of Sunnyside was gunned down on Christmas Eve.
The arrest of Acevedo was made after police had been notified that a man in the area was seen with a gun, allegedly threatening Hernandez's girlfriend. When police stopped the vehicle in which three men were riding, Rodriguez, the driver, eluded the police, only to be captured at a Yakima apartment early yesterday morning by Yakima police officers.
Acevedo was retained in custody Sunday after questioning by Sunnyside police seemed to implicate him in the murder of Hernandez. The third man in the car was released.
