Gabriel A. Acosta, 79, of Sunnyside passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at his home.

He was born Dec. 3, 1926 in San Antonio, Texas to Jesus and Maria de la Luz (Arenas) Acosta. He received his education in Texas. Gabriel served in the U.S. Army and Air Force in World War II.

On May 7, 1951 he married Eva Uribe in Billings, Mont. They made their home in the Lower Valley, where Gabriel worked for Welch’s. He was a member of the Iglesia Evangelica Fortaleza De Sion and spent many hours reading the Bible.

He enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and going on long hauls with his sons. Gabriel cherished time spent with his family.

He is survived by his two sons, Rudy Acosta and wife, Lupe, of Spokane, and Juan Acosta and wife, Eugenia, of Grandview; two daughters, Beatrice Cardenas and husband, Sam, of Sunnyside, and Mary Cardenas and husband, Joe, of Sunnyside; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Frank Acosta of Everett.

Gabriel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eva; one grandson, Daniel Acosta; one granddaughter; and six brothers.

Viewing and visitation will be held Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, from 4 until 8 p.m. with an evening service to be held at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the Iglesia Evangelica Fortaleza De Sion, Sunnyside. Burial will follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
