The Sunnyside High School junior varsity boys basketball team this past Tuesday bounced back from a weekend defeat.
The Grizzly lost a hard-fought game last Friday night, Jan. 28, at Ellensburg. The Bulldogs' JV squad handed Sunnyside a 49-41 loss.
"We just kind of went cold at the end," said Sunnyside JV Coach Eric Lindstrand. "We gave them some open shots at the end."
Lindstrand said the biggest factor in the game was the lack of rebounding by Sunnyside.
"Rebounding just killed us," said Lindstrand.
Lindstrand said the JV game mirrored the varsity contest in the fact that his players ran out of gas by the time the fourth quarter came around. Lindstrand said his players expended a lot of energy in the third quarter to stay in the game.
Gibby Briones had a team-high 9 points in a balanced Sunnyside scoring attack. Hunter Van de Graaf had 8 points and Tyler Carpenter finished with 7.
A couple of days off did the Sunnyside JV squad well, as the Grizzlies bounced back this past Tuesday night at home against Selah. The Grizzlies defeated Selah 63-55.
"They zoned us the whole game and we usually play well against the zone," said Lindstrand. "We have some pretty good outside shooters."
Van de Graaf had a solid game for Sunnyside with 16 points and six boards. Teammate Brandon Coleman added 10 points.
Sunnyside's JV (11-7) plays at home tonight (Friday) against Prosser.
