Sunnyside School Board delays approving Best SELF contract

At the urging of Sunnyside School Board member Bill Smith, directors pulled from their January agenda a contract to help fund the Best SELF program.

Best SELF is a youth summer program that used to be funded by Yakima County. Because of budget problems, the county pulled its funding for the program, which left Best SELF in a financial bind. Best SELF offers a summer program in various school districts throughout Yakima County.

Smith wanted to further discuss on the Best SELF program at the board's February meeting.

Smith said he had concerns about whether the program would be of the same quality, since Yakima County pulled its funding for the program.

The Sunnyside School District is looking at providing numerous in-kind services and a financial commitment of $5,500 to house the site at Pioneer Elementary School starting in late June.

Smith said he wanted a more in-depth report on the program before he would make a decision.

Sunnyside School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Cole said he would bring the issue back before the board in February.
