Lady 'Hounds one game away from State tournament

MOXEE - This past Saturday, the Grandview Lady Greyhounds did what they needed to do. They managed to pull out a win against Cashmere, bringing the Grandview team one game closer to the State tournament.

Last Saturday, the Lady 'Hounds came out tough and stayed tough, winning against Cashmere, 75-60.

"We looked really focused," said Grandview Coach Adolfo Hinojosa of his team. "We played with purpose out there, which was really good to see."

Hinojosa said Saturday's win was the result of a total team effort.

Going into the District game against Cashmere, Hinojosa said he told his team that they were going to have to go in there and play some basketball. And that is exactly what Grandview did.

Hinojosa said his team started out with a full court press against Cashmere, switching to a zone defense part-way through the game. He said switching up the team's defensive strategy helped keep Cashmere at bay.

He said Grandview was also doing well with his transition offense, making several easy fast-break lay-ups against Cashmere.

According to Hinojosa, the Lady 'Hounds got 18 steals on the night, leading to 20 points for Grandview.

Hinojosa said Cashmere tried to press Grandview early on in the game, but after the first few minutes the opposing team took off the press because it wasn't stopping the Lady 'Hounds.

"We were just faster than they were," Hinojosa said.

Helping the Lady 'Hounds win over Cashmere was senior Mari Cornejo, who scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds for Grandview.

"Mari had a really good game," Hinojosa said.

He added that sophomore Cristina Meza, who was brought up from the junior varsity team for the game, also played well on the court. Meza scored 9 points for the Lady 'Hounds.

The win over Cashmere puts Grandview in a loser-out situation as they prepare for their upcoming game against Connell. If Grandview comes out on top, the Lady 'Hounds will win themselves a spot at the State tournament. Grandview will take on Connell Friday, March 4, at 8 p.m. at East Valley High School in Moxee.
