GRANDVIEW - The new year didn't get off to a good start for several Lower Valley residents. Just two hours after ringing in the new year, Grandview police responded to a report of a fight in the 900 block of Conestoga Way and ended up finding a stabbing victim.
According to the Grandview Police Department, when officers arrived at the scene they found a vehicle leaving the area. Police stopped the vehicle and found that the passenger in the car had been stabbed. Grandview Detective Mark Ware said the victim, 24-year-old Camilo Valencia, was being taken to the hospital when police pulled the vehicle over.
Valencia was later taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where he was treated for stab wounds and later transported to a Yakima area hospital.
Ware said the suspect in the stabbing incident, 29-year-old Alejandro Martinez of Mabton, had fled the scene before officers arrived. He said police were able to get information on the vehicle Martinez was driving, as well as a possible destination. Ware said that information was then forwarded to the Mabton Police Department.
According to Ware, a Mabton police officer stopped Martinez in his car just outside of his residence and was able to arrest him without incident.
Martinez was transported to Yakima County Jail this morning, and according to the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office he will be arraigned Wednesday. Ware said Martinez will likely be arraigned on felony assault charges.
The Grandview Police Department is continuing to investigate the case. According to the department, a weapon has yet to be recovered.
