OLYMPIA - Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Sunnyside) was recently appointed to three House committees which, according to the state GOP, will significantly impact the 15th Legislative District.
Newhouse was reappointed to serve on the House Capital Budget Committee and the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee, and was appointed to the newly created Economic Development, Agriculture and Trade Committee. He said he was particularly pleased to be selected as a member of the Economic Development, Agriculture and Trade Committee.
"I've been able to represent the interests of the 15th District as a member of both the Capital Budget and the Financial Institution and Insurance committees," said Newhouse. "And while I look forward to continuing my work on these committees, I'm especially happy to have been appointed to the Economic Development, Agriculture and Trade Committee, because we will be considering both agricultural issues, including water, as well as economic development issues, which are so critical to communities in the 15th District."
The House Capital Budget Committee is responsible for writing the budget to allocate the funds for the construction and repair of public buildings, such as state colleges and universities. The capital budget also includes state money given or lent to local governments or non-profit organizations for infrastructure, housing, and cultural and heritage facilities.
Members of the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee consider bills relating to financial services, including the safety and security of state banks and credit unions. It also considers bills dealing with the regulation of consumer credit and lending, and securities and investments. Additionally, the committee considers legislation pertaining to the Office of the Insurance Commissioner and the solvency and rates of insurance companies in Washington.
The Economic Development and Trade Committee and the Agriculture committees have been combined to consider legislation dealing with agriculture production, marketing and sales, including domestic and international trade of Washington products as well as economic development issues.
"As a member of the Economic Development, Agriculture and Trade Committee I will work to improve Washington's agriculture industry," said Newhouse. "As the state's second largest industry (behind aerospace) it's vital to the health and well-being of our state's economy.
"Of course, rural economic development is vital to the future of our region, and my position on this committee will provide me with the opportunity to have a direct impact on developing policies to improve our state and local economy," said Newhouse
Newhouse and his legislative assistant recently moved offices. They are now located in room 324, John L. O'Brien Building, Olympia, Wa. 98504-0600. He can be reached at (360) 786-7874 or 1-800-562-6000, or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
"I encourage people to contact me in Olympia during session," said Newhouse. "The more feedback I receive from the folks back in district, the better I'm able to represent their views."
