ZILLAH - Tuesday night's non-league wrestling meet between 2A Grandview and 1A Zillah looked more like a lamb going to slaughter, as the Greyhounds dominated the Leopards, winning 39-18.
"We really pressured them hard," said Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny.
Sevigny said the conditioning of his team was really key, as by the third period of many matches his wrestlers were still looking strong.
The evening started off with Grandview's Jacob Robillard winning by forfeit at 152 lbs.
Teammate Jesus Soto won his match at 160 lbs. 12-9 over Westen Argo. The match wasn't as close as the final score might indicate, said Sevigny, as Soto gave up a takedown and escape late in the match.
"He totally controlled the match," said Sevigny.
Rigo Rodriguez won a hard-fought match at 171 lbs., taking a 3-0 decision over Zillah's Frankie Cisneros. Sevigny said both wrestlers took a defensive stand during the match.
Grandview's Heleodoro Lopez obliterated Zillah's Eliglo Jimenez at 189 lbs., winning by technical fall 15-0.
Zillah gained its first win of the night at 215 lbs. Leopard Monelovio Lopez won 13-7 over Junior Pina, who didn't start wrestling until winter break.
Grandview heavyweight Andrew Morales improved to 15-2 on the season with his pin in 5:04 over Marcus Kilthau.
Andrew Tucker won by forfeit for the Greyhounds at 103 lbs.
The Greyhounds forfeited at 112 lbs. to Zillah's Zach Eaton.
At 119 lbs., Grandview's Fernando Godinez won by pin in 3:26 over Vicente Mendoza.
Grandview's Kaelan Nelson continued his hot streak at 125 lbs. with his pin in 2:29 over Herman Mendoza.
Sevigny coached an interesting bout at 130 lbs. Max Saldana of Grandview went up against his Sevigny's nephew, Art Sevigny, winning 13-6.
"It was a pretty decent match," said Sevigny.
Sevigny said Saldana scored five points in the third period to pull away with the match.
Shay Seimears manhandled Zillah's Dustin Sandlin at 135 lbs., winning 13-2.
Matt Saldana lost a close match at 140 lbs. to Mickey Gallegos of Zillah, 13-9. Sevigny said Saldana was wrestling up a couple of weights.
Zillah's Jesse Gallegos pinned Rene Montelongo at 145 lbs. in 1:02.
Grandview will be at home this Thursday night against Naches. The Greyhounds will be hosting their annual tournament on Saturday.
