CLE ELUM - The Cle Elum High School wrestling team hadn't been on the mat for three weeks prior to last night's encounter against Mabton. The time off showed, as the Warriors were pounded by the Vikings 46-21.
"We looked good. The kids did well," said Mabton Coach John Kilian. "They just kind of gassed out on us."
There was no match at either 103 or 130 lbs. last night.
Eli Perez kicked the night off for the Vikings at 189 lbs., losing to Cle Elum's Matt McKenzie by pin in 2:45.
"Eli did okay," said Kilian. "He has just got to get tougher out there."
After dropping his first two matches of the season at the Freeman Invitational last week, Mabton's Robert Marquez dropped down to 215 lbs. for last night's match. Marquez dominated Cle Elum's Cody Vandeventer, winning 17-7. Marquez had three 3-point near falls in the match to improve to 18-2 on the season. Kilian said Marquez had been weighing in at 225 lbs. prior to last night.
Thomas Martinez was moved up to heavyweight for the Vikings, losing to Marshal Allenbaugh in 5:25.
Luis Aviles won by forfeit for the Vikings at 112 lbs.
Andy Torres improved to 12-2 on the season with his manhandling of Cle Elum's Ed Minger, winning by pin in 59 seconds.
"Andy looked great," said Kilian. "He really got after it."
Marco Zepeda lost a competitive match against Cle Elum's Kevin Willett at 135 lbs. Willett, who went to State last year, won the match 7-3.
"He is a good, quality kid," said Kilian of Willett.
After two weeks off the mat due to family commitments in Montana, Mabton's Michael Clark returned to form at 140 lbs., pinning Kyle Mechau in 3:11.
"He was revved up," said Kilian.
Kilian said he for one is glad Clark moved from Montana, as he has become a valuable member of the Vikings wrestling team.
At 145 lbs., Mabton's Jovani Ochoa took advantage of a tiring Nolan Beedle to win by pin in 3:39. Kilian said Beedle started out strong, but simply ran out of steam by the second period.
Mabton's Moises Gutierrez powered past Chaz Hipple to win his 152-lb. match by pin in 3:21. Gutierrez had two takedowns in the match.
The evening ended for the Vikings with Cesar Macedo and Adrian Magana picking up forfeit victories at 160 and 171 lbs., respectively.
The Vikings (1-0, 3-1) will host White Swan next Thursday.
