Eagles soar above the Greyhounds

CONNELL - There are some nights when you just can't hit the broad side of a barn. That was the case for the Grandview High School boys basketball team this past Saturday night at Connell.

The Greyhounds' dismal shooting night led to a 52-33 defeat at the hands of the Eagles.

The loss came in Grandview's league opener.

Grandview was a miserable 23 percent from the field, going 12-for-51. The Greyhounds were also 0-for-9 from 3-point land.

"We just couldn't put it in the basket," said Grandview Coach Scott Parrish. "We need to find some guys who can score."

The game started off promising for Grandview, as the Greyhounds led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. But Grandview would fail to break double digits in the scoring column each of the last three quarters. The Eagles put their exclamation point on the game with an 18-6 run in the second quarter and a 14-7 showing in the final period.

Parrish said the height of the Eagles really caused Grandview problems. He said Connell didn't do anything special defensively, playing in man for the first half and then going to a zone defense in the second half.

"They really hurt us (with their size)," said Parrish. "They played real good team defense."

Kris Knight, who stands 6'7", was the leading scoring for the Eagles with 23 points. Teammate John Conrad, 6'9", added 12 points.

Parrish said Grandview had a particularly difficult time offensively against Knight, who had a towering hand in every shot Grandview took.

Connell was solid offensively, shooting 16-for-26 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point land. Connell also hit 16-of-23 free throws compared to 9-of-13 for the Greyhounds.

The Eagles did a nice job of containing James Vela, who was held scoreless Saturday night.

Cordero Cisneros and Adam Dion led Grandview in scoring with 10 points apiece.

"Cordero played really hard. I was real proud of him," said Parrish. "Adam has been playing well."

The Greyhounds (0-1, 6-2) will play at Toppenish on Friday night and then host Ki-Be on Saturday.
