MOXEE - It was a rather quiet outing, before a rather quiet and small crowd at Highland last night for the Mabton High School wrestling team.
The Vikings (3-0) thumped Highland Thursday night 48-12.
"It was one of those nights where it was hard as a team to get pumped up," said Mabton Coach John Kilian.
Cesar Macedo, though, obviously didn't need any motivation. Macedo had an easy time in his 160 lb. encounter with Ethan Bogle, winning by pin in 1:22.
"Cesar looked good," said Kilian. "He got right out there and got his business done."
At 171 lbs., Mabton's Adrian Magana suffered a heartbreaking loss. Magana lost by pin in 5:58 to Highland's Chad Blizzard. Magana was trailing 3-2 at the time of the pin.
Mabton's Eli Perez and Robert Marquez posted back-to-back forfeit victories at 189 and 215 lbs.
Neither team fielded wrestlers at 275 or 103 lbs.
Luis Aviles improved his record to 16-8 on the season for the Vikings. Aviles won his 112 lb. match by pin in 3:40 over Gary Erickson. Kilian said Aviles was stringing together a number of different pinning combinations, but couldn't quite put things together.
Leading 7-1, Mabton's Andy Torres put away Highland's Eduardo Flores, winning by pin in 2:50 during their 119 lb. bout.
There was also no match at either 125 or 130 lbs.
Marco Zepeda won by pin over Highland's Zach Bogle at 135 lbs. Zepeda was leading 14-1 when he pinned Bogle in 5:06.
Mabton's Michael Clark won by forfeit.
At 145 lbs., Highland's Kyle McLean pinned Mabton's Jovani Ochoa in 5:27. Kilian said it was simply an off night for Ochoa.
Moises Gutierrez finished the evening with a forfeit victory for the Vikings at 152 lbs.
Mabton will be hosting nine schools this Saturday at the Viking Invitational. Some of the schools include the junior varsity teams from Sunnyside and Grandview, Toppenish, Lake Roosevelt and Mt. Rainier. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m.
