BENTON CITY - Three Sunnyside residents sustained injuries last Saturday evening as the result of a two-vehicle collision on I-82, near Benton City.
The three were all transported to Kadlec Medical Center in the Tri-Cities to receive medical attention. They included 20-year-old Guadalupe N. Rodriguez, Jose P. Diaz, 25, and Neyva P. Serrano, 12.
Diaz and Serrano were passengers in a 1997 Toyota 4-runner, driven by Rodriguez.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Rodriguez was westbound on I-82 at about 5:55 p.m. Saturday when she got into the left lane to pass a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant, driven by Marcelo P. Nieto, 36, of Toppenish. WSP troopers said the Toyota struck the Toppenish man's vehicle. Rodriguez lost control of his Toyota 4-runner and it rolled off the north side of the roadway onto Chandler Road, coming to rest on the passenger's side of the vehicle.
Rodriguez and Diaz were wearing seatbelts, but the 12-year-old Serrano did not have a safety restraint on.
Nieto, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured. He was able to drive his Mitsubishi from the scene of the accident. The '97 Toyota was totaled.
