Sun Valley fifth at Big Stick tourney

SELAH - Despite a tournament filled with errors, the Sun Valley 16-18-year-old baseball team battled its way to a fifth place finish at the Big Stick eight-team tournament in Selah, which started last Thursday.

Sun Valley opened the tourney with a 4-3 loss to eventual tourney champ West Valley, the younger of the two Upper Valley teams.

Sun Valley followed that game with a 4-2 win over the Yakima Scarlets on Friday.

Gibby Briones, who had a sensational tournament, and Cole Boboth combined to toss a two-hitter for Sun Valley in the win.

Sun Valley trailed in this game 2-0 before beginning its rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lucas Ramos began the rally with a lead-off walk and moved over to second off a sacrifice fly from Nathan Cornelius. Following back-to-back walks to Timmy Briones and Cameron Boboth to load the bases, Gibby Briones ripped a single to plate the first run. His older brother, Timmy, then scored off a passed ball.

Sun Valley pulled away with the game with lone runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Gibby Briones led Sun Valley's attack at the plate, going 2-for-2. Joel Zakahi had a lead-off triple in the fifth.

A highlight for Sun Valley was on the defensive end, despite committing four errors in the game. Sun Valley turned two inning-ending double plays, coming in the sixth and seventh frames. Sun Valley Coach Dave Martinez said his first baseman, Lucas Ramos, had an outstanding day at the bag, including making a great dig to help turn one of the double plays.

On Saturday, Sun Valley showed some grit in a 14-9 loss to Lakeside Recovery, a select team out of the Bellevue area.

"I was real proud of our guys," said Martinez. "They competed real hard."

Sun Valley fell behind 12-2 after getting hammered for eight runs in the bottom of the third. Sun Valley gave up five of the eight hits to Lakeside Recovery in the third inning while issuing four walks and hitting one batter in the frame.

For the game, Sun Valley's pitching staff of B.J. Miller, Zach Marquez and Lucas Ramos combined to give up eight hits, nine walks and hit three batters. Although, Ramos did have a couple of strikeouts in an inning of work.

Sun Valley plated four runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run double by Zakahi. Cameron Boboth also had a double in the frame.

Sun Valley had its best all-around game in Sunday's trophy round, beating East Valley for fifth place.

Sun Valley whipped East Valley 16-6 in six innings.

Gibby Briones was solid on the mound in a complete game outing, despite giving up eight walks. Briones allowed five hits and fanned three batters.

Briones helped his cause with an amazing 4-for-4 effort at the plate. He had a lead-off double to start the game and then added three singles and a walk.

"He has been a great lead-off batter for us," said Martinez.

Sun Valley had a couple of monstrous innings, which include an eight-run second and a seven-run sixth inning.

Ramos had a two-run double in the second and Timmy Briones had a bases-clearing extra base hit in the frame also. Nathan Cornelius had a double in the second inning for Sun Valley.

Cameron Boboth had a two-run double in the sixth inning for Sun Valley.

Sun Valley only had one error in the game and turned a couple of double plays, coming in the third and fifth innings.

Martinez said it was a good effort for his team at the tournament, as Sun Valley played hard despite struggling at times.

Sun Valley (10-13-1) will finish up its summer season this Thursday at East Valley.
