Piranhas deal Sharks first defeat of season

photo

Sunnyside swimmer David Knee splashes down in the boys 18&U backstroke last night against Prosser. Prosser avenged an earlier season defeat to Sunnyside. To have a shot at claiming the Mid-Valley League swim title, the Sharks must win their remaining meets, including a meet at Selah on Wednesday, July 27.

PROSSER - Claiming all the first place finishes in the boys and girls 8&U events, as well as in the boys 14&U, 16&U and 18&U races, the Prosser Piranhas eked out a 406-368 victory over the Sunnyside Sharks last night.

For Sunnyside (7-1), the 38-point loss was its first defeat of the season. The Sharks, in their own pool three weeks ago, edged the Piranhas (5-3) by 25 points.

Last night, Sunnyside dominated the girls 10&U, 12&U and 16&U events-coming away with 18 of the 21 victories possible. Toni Castillo (12&U) and Katie Knee (16&U) combined for nine of those individual race wins, and the duo was in on another three relay victories, as well. Brittany Broersma also brought home two individual race victories from the girls 10&U division, as well as sharing two relay wins.

The Sharks, too, were the clear cut winners in the boys 10&U and 12&U age divisions, winning 10 of the 14 races. Tad Tyhuis of Sunnyside was a two-time individual race winner at 10&U, and swam on two winning relay squads; and teammate Jacob Hollander won three of the five 12&U individual races, as well as being on two of the winning relay teams.

The race of the night Thursday evening proved to be the girls 14&U, 40-yard freestyle sprint. Onlookers couldn't tell who hit the wall first, and rightly so, as Sunnyside's Kaitlyn Broersma and Prosser's Michelle Elliott recorded identical times of 22.54 seconds.
