S'side woman dies in collision

A two-vehicle accident claimed the life of Gertrude E. Meadowcroft of Sunnyside last Friday afternoon.

The Friday, July 22, accident occurred just before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Independence and Washout roads, about four miles north of Sunnyside.

According to Washington State Patrol troopers, Meadowcroft, 70, was northbound on Washout Road in a 2003 Ford Focus. She stopped at the Independence Road intersection, then attempted a left-hand turn onto Independence. An oncoming 1990 semi-truck, which was eastbound on Independence, struck Meadowcroft's four-door sedan while the vehicle was in the intersection.

WSP troopers said she died at the scene of the accident.

The cause of the fatality, said the WSP, was Meadowcroft's failure to yield the right of way to the semi, which was driven by Aaron D. Metzger, 22, of Pasco. Metzger was not injured as a result of the collision.

Metzger's semi-truck sustained approximately $5,000 worth of damages.
