Sunnyside girls carry Sharks to big triumph over Toppenish

photo

The Sharks' Christopher Newhouse glides through the water in the boys 14&U backstroke race. Newhouse helped Sunnyside to a convincing win over visiting Toppenish last night.

The girls on the Sunnyside Sharks swim team have been making waves all summer long. Last night, they continued to splash past the competition, leading the Sharks to a dominating 509-232 victory over the visiting Toppenish Tarpons.

Sunnyside's girls outscored Toppenish's female swimmers by a 316-52 margin.

The Sunnyside boys also prevailed over their Toppenish counterparts, but the winning margin was a slim 186-180 advantage.

The 509-232 win upped the Sharks' Mid-Valley Summer Swim League record to 10-1. Sunnyside closes out the regular season tonight at Selah. The season ending league championship meet is scheduled for this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Wapato.

As has been the case all season long, Sunnyside's Toni Castillo-arguably the league MVP this summer-was unstoppable last night. Castillo won all five of the girls 12&U individual races. She also swam on the two winning relay squads in her age division.

Even more impressive than the five individual wins Castillo garnered last night was the way in which she claimed victory. Simply put, she was in a zone that no one could approach. Castillo's biggest margin of victory came in the 200-meter individual medley. She bested the runner-up, teammate Alissa Martin, by an incredible 23.69-second margin. And Martin, as many in the Mid-Valley league can attest, is a pretty decent swimmer in her own right. Castillo also turned heads when she finished a nearly unbelievable 9.85 seconds ahead of her closest challenger in the shorter 50-meter butterfly sprint. Castillo's closest race of the evening came in the 50-meter breaststroke. Teammate Marisa Broersma pushed Castillo to the very end, but at the finish it was Castillo winning by just under a quarter of a second.

Toppenish had no answer, either, for girls 16&U swimmer Katie Knee. Like Castillo, she won all five individual races in her age division, and like Castillo, she won going away in most of them. Knee hit the finishing wall nearly 15 seconds ahead of her closest challenger in the 200 IM, and in the 50-meter sprints she won by margins of 4.29 seconds ('fly), 0.69 seconds (breast), 6.20 seconds (back) and 2.73 seconds (free).

Sunnyside's Kaitlyn Broersma also had plenty to crow about last night, as she was victorious in four of the five girls 14&U individual races. Broersma's wins came against whom many consider to be Toppenish's finest girls swimmer, Sabrina Galaviz, also regarded as one of the league's top swimmers.

In the girls 8&U division, Sunnyside's Lyndsee Anderson carried the torch for the Sharks. Anderson nabbed three wins (50-fly, 50-breast and 50-free), with teammate Sarah Hollander grabbing the other victory in the 50-back.

Brittany Broersma averted a girls 10&U first place sweep by Toppenish by winning the 50-breast and 200-IM events. Toppenish's Alexandra Medelez won the three other individual races in that age division.

On the boys side, it was Jacob Hollander and Giovanni Rodriguez who stood out for the Sharks. Hollander, at 12&U, claimed all five individual race victories. Rodriguez was a four-time individual race winner at 10&U.

Picking up one win apiece for the Sharks were Timmy Martinez, Alex Perez and Joel Martin in the boys 8&U division, Tad Tyhuis at 10&U, Aaron Henry at 14&U and David Knee at 16&U.

The Tarpons got four wins from 14&U competitor Anthony Galaviz, three victories by Tyler Ward (16&U) and Jason Roberts (18&U), and one apiece from Tyler Roth (16&U) and Daniel Cerna (18&U).
