City hires new finance director

Sunnyside City Manager Bob Stockwell announced this past Thursday the hiring of a new city finance director.

Scott James has been hired as the new director of the city's finances. James will begin his position in Sunnyside on June 27.

"Scott has all of the technical skills this important position calls for, plus a positive outlook on getting to know Sunnyside and working with our very competent finance staff," said Stockwell.

James is currently the senior accountant with the City of Edmonds. He brings to Sunnyside 20 years of work in the public and private sector, dealing with accounting and other finance issues. He is a graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor's degree in business administration and is a certified public accountant.

"James brings a thorough understanding of municipal finance with hands-on experience in all aspects of Washington statutes and the regulations of the state auditor," said Stockwell.

James was selected for the position out of a candidate pool of 11, representing several different states around the country, said Stockwell.

Stockwell said while working in Edmonds, James has been responsible for developing the city's annual financial report and annual budget. He has also dealt with numerous financial statements and has been responsible for assuring the city's compliance with the governmental accounting standards.

Another bonus to hiring James, said Stockwell, is that he has been working with the same financial software Sunnyside has been implementing over the last few years.

"This experience will allow the city to move forward in completing the implementation of the remaining elements of this system, which will simplify the annual budget and allow greater access by the public to the city's billing and budget systems," said Stockwell.
