'Summer Institute' for teachers coming to S'side in late June

A unique opportunity-a time when local educators can gather for a week to learn new teaching techniques while enjoying social and wellness opportunities-presents itself in Sunnyside June 27 through July 1.

Actually, the opportunity is being made available by two Sunnyside couples: Heather and Mark Marro and Dawn and Eroll Miles. The four have always traveled to the Tri-Cities to take the Summer Institute five-credit, 50-clock hour summer workshop training to keep their teaching certificates updated or earn additional credits for salary advancement. This year, though, the two local couples are bringing the Summer Institute workshop to Sunnyside.

"Many of us have always had to drive the distance to listen to all these incredibly knowledgeable speakers who are passionate about their message," said Mr. Miles. "With the large number of educators in the Lower Valley, we wanted to make it convenient and eliminate the long drive."

The keynote speaker for the Sunnyside workshop will be Brad Henning. He is described as a master communicator whose truth mixed with humor and a passion for kids has taken him all across North America with a message that is helping children change their lives.

"I'm sure once our administrators hear him speak they'll invite him back next year for assemblies because his 'Relationships' talk is designed to teach kids what healthy relationships can be," said Miles. "Kids love hearing him talk about creative dating, and it makes them think about and re-evaluate their decisions about physical relationships."

Mrs. Miles went on to explain that the Sunnyside Summer Institute workshop will also include wellness activities each of the five days, "...because we believe good health is vital for everyone in every profession.

"We are thrilled to get the Witfit Elliptical Cycle Company to come in and let teachers try out their cycles," she said. "This is a new, booming company out of Pasco, and I think they will be hitting it big soon!"

Registration for the June 27 through July 1 Sunnyside workshop, to be held at the local high school, is underway now at www.summerinstitutes.com. web site.
